A trip to Walmart could have positive impacts for your loved one with Alzheimer’s disease

Walmart wouldn’s typically be the first, second or third destination an Alzheimer’s caregiver would think to bring their loved one. But, this post from a caregiver describes how trips to Walmart actually improve the quality of life for her loved one.

This caregiver found that when she went to Walmart, it accomplished three major things:

Physical and Mental Exercise – Both she and her loved one were able to get out of the house and walk around the store. Although Walmart can be quite large, the large aisle ways allows for some contained exercise for your loved one to explore. And with all the various types of products to look at, he or she can get a bit of a mental exercise. If your loved one has a tendency to wander too far, be sure to keep a close eye on him or her!

Bright Lights Walmart is a well-lit store, and the bright lights can help improve the mood of the Alzheimer’s patient. Many Alzheimer’s patients suffer from depression, so by spending time in a place that is well lit might help battle this symptom.

Socialization Many people shop at Walmart, and it usually serves as a good venue for people watching. This is no different for your loved one with Alzheimer’s. If he or she doesn’s get too nervous around potentially large groups of people, he or she might benefit from watching people shop, pick items up or push the carts around. It’s live entertainment!

Although a trip to Walmart might sound daunting, if you feel confident enough that your loved one might enjoy this new adventure, consider giving it try! Who knows, it might become part of your weekly routine.
